Racing actually started 10 minutes before the posted start time and under ideal conditions:  about  three or four knots of wind from the north and bright, albeit overcast skies.

The course was set up with a windward leg that spanned 3/4s of the length of Friendship Pond, then counter-clockwise to the northwest corner of the lake before turning south to the leeward mark just off the southern shore, then a short run north to the start/finish line which was set just 15 or 20 feet to windward of the leeward mark.  All marks were left to port.

There is a faux covered bridge at the water’s edge that affords an excellent view of the entire lake from the 6 large open windows.

As the rain started Skippers spontaneously moved into the covered bridge and took positions.  As as the rain continued, and then increased the regatta continued as though nothing had happened.  Photographs clearly showed the large drops impacting the water.  When the thunderstorm broke  racing continued.  No one wanted to go out in the rain to retrieve a boat.  It was coming down in sheets.  The wind reached a sustained 25 knots with gusts into the 30s, and to our surprise the Dragons did just fine!

Of the first nine races Jim Schaefer won three, TR Lamb two and Mike Cavanaugh four.  Mike won the last three to clinch first place.  Jim never placed lower than third ensuring second place for him, and TR took third.  TR’s mark rounding was his nemesis.  He undershot a couple of the marks and on at least two occasions actually snagged marks -  and couldn’t shake loose until after the entire fleet had passed him by.

Mike McEwen and Jack Adams took 4th and 5th respectively, but it was extremely close.  In fact, Mike’s two third place finishes in the last two races provided the winning margin for him.   Prior to the throw out it was Jack 49 and Mike 50.  Mike’s throw out was a 7 for his DNS, while Jack’s was a 5, giving Mike 43 and Jack 44.

The wind eased and the thunderstorm passed.  No significant boat damage was inflicted.  Mike Cavanaugh’s grounding on the lee shore was due to his inattentiveness, not weather conditions.

Brusters Creamery served 6 flavors of freshly made ice cream throughout the regatta to all who came by for the event.  Menno Haven Volunteer Services — over a dozen, including  junior volunteers helped residents of the Village get lakeside for the racing and then under the shelter of the gazebo and pavilion when the rains came.  Several of the junior volunteers took orders and then delivered ice cream to the skippers lakeside; and each took a turn sailing the Dragon Force sailboats.  A fine time was had by all hands.

It was a memorable regatta!
