CVMYC May 2019 Racing

Another race day for Cumberland Valley Model Yacht Club is in the books for the 2019 season. The weather at City Park Lake was in the mid 60s with light, variable, pond-swirling wind. Seven DF65 participated, including new skipper Dick White. He travelled from Severna Park, MD to race his brand-new DF with us. He also has a DF95 that he races locally and has raced big boats on the Chesapeake. It was great to have him join us for the day.
The light swirling wind required skippers to pay close attention to their masthead fly to react quickly or be passed. It was not unusual to have 3 or 4 lead changes in a single leg of the course! That truly showed in the results as we had 6 skippers who scored at least a 2nd place during the 8 races. Jarl won the first two but then in the next race Mike edged him out by a few inches at the finish with a classic starboard-port tack advantage.
After a lunch break Jack led from the start and never looked back as he won Race 4 by a commanding margin. He was followed by Dick in 2nd place with his new boat for his best finish of the day. After 4 races only two points separated the top three skippers!! Jarl then settled in and won the last 4 races to be able to win the day overall. Mike was able to pull away from Jack and took 2nd by 4 points.

1. Jarl Wathne-13
2. Mike Cavanaugh-22
3. Jack Adams-26
4. Nick Krawczak-32
5. TR Lamb-39
6. Dick White-45
7. Helen Stevens-49

The EC12 fleet was smaller as we had four skippers but Nick’s boat had some sail winch issues so never made the start of racing. The first race was won by Jarl with Mike beating TR for 2nd. But then TR had some boat gremlins, leaving Jarl and Mike to match race with Jarl taking the wins. The wind went very light so we called it a day.
